The Difference Between Dental Implants and Dentures

With the development of dental implant surgery, dentures have become an outdated method of replacing a full arch of missing teeth. Not only do you have to deal with adhesives and the risk of jawbone recession with dentures, you also lose up to 75% of your sense of taste when the roof of your mouth is covered! All-on-X dental implants solve all these problems, restoring your bite strength and your ability to eat an unlimited diet. You can even keep more hydrated without worrying about loosening your teeth!

All-on-X dental implants are the premium solution for preserving the strength of your jawbone, as well.

While traditional dentures provide no stimulation to your jawbone, All-on-X implants act like simulated tooth roots, strengthening your jawbone and preserving the shape of your face. With proper care and maintenance, these teeth replacements can last the rest of your life!

If you prefer the convenience of removable dentures, consider getting implant supported dentures instead. These dentures attach to posts that are surgically implanted into your jaw, granting you improved bite strength and reduced jawbone loss. At the same time, you can remove these and clean them as you would clean your traditional dentures.

Our Smile Transformation Process

Step 1: Planning and Digitalization

Prior to the procedure, we take a CT scan, 3-d scan of your teeth and gums, photos and short video of you talking to record your smile line accurately. All this information is digitialized as computer files so our lab team can start designing your immediate healing teeth.  Dr. Sal carefully studies your Ct scan to determine the positions that he can possibly engage the implants at a certain torque value so they can be loaded immediately with the healing teeth.   Dr. Sal has studied thousands of CT scans.

Step 2: Surgery and Healing Teeth

The night before your dental implant surgery, Dr. Sal will call you personally to go over your pre-operative instructions and discuss any questions or concerns you may have. On the day of procedure we make sure you are comfortable and don’t feel anything. Dr. Sal places the implants on the predetermined positions. He is also trained to treat many cases of severe bone loss. Dr. Sal uses Erbium and NdYag lasers during the surgery  to effectively remove any infected tissues, eliminate bacteria and for lasers’ homeostatic properties to help with healthy healing of bone and soft tissues of the oral cavity. Once the placement of implants is completed, the implant positions are recorded through a 4-D mapping technology. Our talented lab team completes the design and starts fabricating your healing teeth. During this time you’d be comfortably resting.  On the same day we deliver your Immediate healing teeth. This is a screw retained, aesthetically beautiful looking bridge and it is one of the most exciting and emotional moments of this journey for many people. Our patients say they learn how to smile again, and don’t feel self conscious about their teeth anymore.

Step 3: Healing Time

The third step is the healing time. Dr. Sal uses this time to gather more clinical information to further customize your definitive teeth. Missing teeth, loose teeth or loose dentures lead to loss of proper bite. Basically, due to lack of a set closure position the brain receives mixed messages about how far to expand or contract the jaw muscles. Dr. Sal uses the healing teeth as a reference to help you establish your new bite, by evaluating chewing and wear patterns and your feedback.  While the top and bottom teeth can be designed to match and can be fitted to your face on our sophisticated software, the muscles and soft tissues of the mouth can cause discrepancies that wouldn’t have been accounted for. These variations are unique to each person and require new solutions every time. Dr. Sal records these patterns to modify your definitive prosthetic teeth accordingly and meanwhile your jaw muscles and tongue develop new muscle memory just like while healing from an orthopedic surgery. Another benefit of healing teeth is to stabilize the implants to aid in osseointegration, which means implants attaching to bone completely. Dr. Sal will schedule a check-up appointment for you after your surgery to ensure that you’re healing well. This is also where we preform scans and measurements for your final restoration.

Step 4: Permanent Zirconia Teeth

The fourth step is delivering your Permanent Implant Teeth which are many times made from Zirconia. Zirconia is a naturally occurring ceramic and the most biocompatible prosthetic dental material available. Its highly polished non-porous structure makes it easily cleansable. Its strength and durability are unmatched.

You can bite into an apple, eat corn on the cob or go to your favorite steak house once you have your Zirconia teeth.

Before After
Before After

About three months after your initial dental implant surgery, you’ll come back to receive your final prosthesis. This is made of durable zirconia and can last a lifetime with proper care and maintenance. You take care of it the same way you would take care of your natural teeth: regular brushing and flossing. You can begin enjoying your improved quality of life as soon as you leave our Ashland, MA office!
